At the invitation of JUFE of Sociology and Humanities, Professor Huang Guangwei, Dean of the graduate school of earth environmental studies at sophia university, Japan, will deliver an intensive foreign expert course titled field training from June 26 to 29. Designed for the 2025 cohort of undergraduate social work students, this four-day, 16-hour course will center on the intersection of ecological civilization and social governance, and will be framed by the united nations sustainable development goals and related social issues. It aims to broaden students’ interdisciplinary knowledge and strengthen their practical skills in areas such as environmental governance and disaster emergency response.

Professor Huang Guangwei is a distinguished scholar in earth environmental science and sustainable development-oriented social governance. He has long been engaged in research and teaching on pathways to ecological civilization and the SDGs, disaster emergency management and social work intervention mechanisms, and the application of service-learning in grassroots community education. With a solid theoretical foundation and extensive cross-national fieldwork experience, he has designed this course drawing on his own research findings and frontline practice in earth environmental governance, disaster crisis intervention, and public participation. The course will offer both faculty and students a practice-oriented learning experience that connects cutting-edge international scholarship with tangible value for grassroots social governance. The content will be organized in three progressive tiers—concepts, methods, and participation.

In recent years, the School of Sociology and Humanities has been continuously promoting interdisciplinary development under the “New Liberal Arts” initiative by inviting overseas scholars to offer specialized courses and building platforms for international academic exchange. This Field Training course will provide students with valuable support in understanding global ecological governance issues and building practical competencies in grassroots social governance.
All social work students of the 2025 cohort are expected to attend this valuable learning opportunity on time, complete the relevant background preparation before each session, actively engage with professor huang during class, and thoughtfully review the course content afterward, so as to turn the theories and methods acquired into a solid foundation for future field training and professional practice. Students from other cohorts and interested young faculty members are also welcome to audit the course.
