School of Society and Humanities, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, formerly known as the School of Humanities, was established in 2002, with its origins tracing back to the Basic Courses Department founded in 1994. In 2009, part of the original School of Humanities and part of the School of Arts and Communication were merged to form the new School of Humanities. In 2024, the school was renamed as the School of Society and Humanities. Currently, the school has over 1,100 faculty members, students, and staff. It comprises four teaching departments: the Department of Sociology, the Department of Social Work, the Department of Journalism and Communication, and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature. Additionally, the school houses the Jiangxi Provincial Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences: Research Center for Green Development and Chinese-style Modernization. It also features several research institutions, including the Social Work Policy and Theory Research Base (Co-constructed with the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee's Social Work Department), Jiangxi Provincial Institute for Aging Development Research.(Co-constructed with the Civil Affairs Department), the Social Work and Social Policy Research Center, the Jiangxi Provincial Cultural Industry Research Center, the Asia-Pacific Economic and Social Development Research Center, the Jiangxi Provincial Taoist Culture Research Center, the Jiangxi Social Science Literature Research Center, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics New Media Research Center, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics Population and Development Research Center, and the County Survey and Economic Sociology Research Center. The current dean is Jiang Guohe, and the secretary of the Party Committee of school is Chen Hua.
The school's academic strength has been continuously enhanced. In 2024, the school was approved to establish a first-level doctoral program in sociology. It also holds first-level master's programs in sociology /journalism and communication, as well as professional Master of Social Work (MSW), Master of Journalism and Communication(MJC), and Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(MTCSOL). Among these, the social work program is one of the first 33 nationally approved institutions.
The school has achieved remarkable results in first-class undergraduate education. Actively responding to the national strategy of New Liberal Arts construction, the school leverages the advantages of its finance and data statistics disciplines to vigorously promote interdisciplinary integration in education. It currently offers undergraduate programs such as social work (digital social governance), journalism (economic news), and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (business direction). These programs enjoy a good social reputation: the social work program is a national first-class undergraduate program , a Jiangxi first-class undergraduate program, and has ranked first in Jiangxi's undergraduate program comprehensive evaluation for two consecutive times; the journalism program has been approved for Jiangxi's outstanding talent training program and Jiangxi first-class undergraduate program, and won the national first-class undergraduate program in 2021; Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages program (business direction) won the provincial first-class undergraduate program in 2021. The school attaches great importance to curriculum construction, possessing 3 national first-class undergraduate courses and 12 provincial first-class undergraduate courses of various types.
The school's faculty strength has been continuously strengthened. In recent years, through vigorously introducing high-level and top-tier talents, the school has initially formed a faculty team with a certain scale, reasonable structure, rigorous academic approach, high academic attainments, and a spirit of innovation and progress. Currently, the school has 81 full-time faculty members, including 12 doctoral supervisors, 16 professors, and 20 associate professors; 4 provincial academic leaders, 2 provincial young and middle-aged backbone teachers; 64 teachers hold doctoral degrees, and 68 are master's supervisors. Among them, Professor Wen Rui is a recipient of the State Council's special allowance; Professor Chen Jiaqi is a member of the Ministry of Education's Sociology discipline guidance committee; American scholar Flavio F. Marsiglia was awarded the national talent program chair professor by our university in 2022 . Additionally, Professor Yin Zhonghai serves as the deputy secretary-general of the China Social Work Education Association and vice chairman of the rural social work and anti-poverty social work professional committees; Professor Jiang Guohe is a standing council member of the China Sociological Society, vice chairman of the rural sociology professional committee, and chairman of the financial social work professional committee of the China Social Work Education Association; Professors Zhang Pinliang and Wang Yuqi are members of Jiangxi's degree committee subject evaluation group; Professor Yin Pingjun is a member of the Ministry of Civil Affairs' industry guidance committee and the academic committee of the State Council Development Research Center's rural research institute; Professor Tang Bin is Jiangxi's outstanding social work leader and one of China's top 100 social workers in 2018; Dr. Zhou Bowen is a member of China Writers Association and has won the Bing Xin Children's Literature Award. To promote teaching reform and discipline construction, the school has also successively invited Professor Shen Yuan and Professor Liu Shiding from Tsinghua University as team leaders for the economic sociology and financial sociology teaching team, invited Professor Guan Xinping, former standing vice president of the China Social Work Education Association and professor from Nankai University, and Professor Xiong Yuegen from Peking University as specially invited professors for the social policy discipline direction. In recent years, the school's faculty internationalization process has accelerated, with 3 teachers graduating from prestigious universities such as Johns Hopkins University, Osaka University of Economics, and University of Turin, Italy, and over 20 faculty members visiting or teaching in the United States, Russia, Britain, Australia, Greece, South Africa, Argentina, Thailand, Jordan, and other countries. Meanwhile, the school has also invited Professor Gao Bo from Duke University and Professor Sun Zhigang from University of Missouri as visiting professors.
The school's research strength is robust. From 2009 to 2025, the school's faculty members have consecutively received national social science fund project approvals for 17 years without interruption, totaling 56 projects. Among these, the school has approved 17 national social science fund projects in the recent three years (2023-2025), including 3 key projects. In the past five years, the school has hosted 20 ministerial-level projects from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Civil Affairs, National Committee for Ancient Books in Higher Education Institutions, State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty alleviation and Development's special exit inspection project, National Rural Revitalization Bureau's rural revitalization and poverty alleviation case summary project, etc., as well as 2 provincial major bidding projects. The school's faculty have published over 180 papers in journals such as "Sociological Research", "Journalism and Communication Research", "Literary Review", "Literary Heritage", "World History", "Guangming Daily", etc., including 26 authoritative papers. They have published 45 monographs. The school has won nearly 30 awards at provincial and national levels, including Jiangxi's outstanding social science research achievements award, teaching achievement awards, awards from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, National Aging Commission, Communist Youth League Central Committee, etc., and various awards from national academic societies. Among these, the "Financial Management Applied Writing" co-edited by Professor Luo Bing and Professor Wang Zhongyun won the Ministry of Education's "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" textbook.
The school's talent cultivation features are distinctive, and student activities are rich and colorful. The school attaches great importance to student talent cultivation, exploring a "one body, two wings" educational model, establishing the school motto of "博文笃行、弘道济民" (broad learning, firm practice; promote the way, benefit the people), cultivating innovative and entrepreneurial talents who can both take root in local culture and face globalization. The school has established platforms and systems such as undergraduate tutor system, reading report sessions, "Humanities Window" online television station, and liberal arts culture entering dormitories. The school emphasizes collaborative cultivation, establishing a joint training system with Jinan University, strengthening joint survey work with Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, and other universities. Meanwhile, the school has carried out rich and colorful Party and Youth League activities, enhancing students' comprehensive qualities. In-school students have won over 200 awards in numerous competitions such as the “Challenge Cup” National College Students' Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition,National College Students' Advertising Art Competition, National College Students' Economic News Works Competition, National Social Work Microfilm Competition, National College Students' Language and Literature Competition, National Journalism and Communication Professional Degree Teaching Guidance Committee Teaching Case Competition, National Social Work Professional Teaching Guidance Committee Graduate Case Competition, etc. A large number of graduates play important roles in the political, academic, and business sectors, emerging as outstanding alumni.
The school's international cooperation and exchanges are vibrant. The school focuses on international perspectives, strengthens international cooperation, and provides rich international learning resources for students. The school is Jiangxi's only member unit of the International Social Work Education Alliance. It has co-constructed a collaborative research team with the Arizona State University Global Institute for Applied Health Research, and maintains close exchange and cooperation with renowned international universities such as University of Pennsylvania, Michigan State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Coventry University, UK, Sophia University, Japan, etc. The school frequently invites renowned international faculty and experts to exchange and lecture, organizes students to visit and exchange with renowned universities in the United States, Japan, Australia, Britain, and other countries. The school has successfully hosted international academic conferences such as "China's Moderately Universal Welfare Society and International Experience Research Forum”,
"Environmental History and Social Governance International Forum", "US-China Cooperative Social Work Education Advanced Training Program", "Annual Conference of China Sociological Society's Social Policy Research Professional Committee and Thirteenth International Forum", "International Academic Symposium on Rural Revitalization and Social Changes in the Process of Chinese-style Modernization", etc. The school has invited dozens of internationally renowned experts and scholars, including Professor Worster, winner of the Bancroft Prize (the highest historical award in the US), Professor Cronon, Professor John Jackson, dean of the School of Social Policy and Social Work at University of Pennsylvania, Professor Bernard Harris, dean of the School of Social Work and Social Policy at University of Strathclyde, UK, Professor Hong Junhao from the Department of Communication at University of Buffalo, State University of New York, Professor Trevor Curran from Edith Cowan University, Australia, and Mr. Lai Yongkai, former president of Hong Kong Social Work Association, to lecture at our school. Since 2006, the school has successively cooperated with Hong Kong's Stut Foundation, Hong Kong Mountain Travel Society, Hong Kong Caritas, etc., selecting students to exchange and intern in Hong Kong, enhancing students' practical abilities and international perspectives, and improving the school's educational quality. In 2011, the school also cooperated with Edith Cowan University, Australia, with cooperation projects including journalism and social work undergraduate "2+2" exchange programs, sociology master's "2+1" program. In 2024, the school was approved for the second time for China Scholarship Council Rural Revitalization Talent Training Program,continuing for 6 years to send students on public exchange programs to renowned international universities such as Sophia University, Japan.
